COURSEAND PROGRAMME

OUTLINES OFCHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM (CBCS)
1.Core Course (14 for honours courses : 4 discipline specific papers each for regular courses and 2 papers each for English and Hindi/MIL in B.A./B.Com) : The papers under this category are going to be taught uniformly across all unversities with 30% deviation proposed in the draft. The purpose of fixing core papers is to ensure that all the institutions follow a minimum common curriculum so that each institution/rsity category aim to cover the basics that a student is expected to imbibe in that particular discipline. A course, which should compulsorily be studied by a candidate as a core requirement is termed as a Core course.

2.Elective Course : Generally a course which can be chosen from a pool of courses and which may be very specific or specialized or advanced of supportive to the discipline/subject of study or which provides an extended scope or which enables an exposure to some other discipline/subject/domain or nurtures the candidate’s proficiency/skill is called an Elective Course.

3.Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) Course (4 for honours courses and 2 each for regular courses ) : Elective course offered under the main discipline/subject of study is referred to as Discipline Specific Elective. The list provided under this category are suggestive in nature and each University has complete freedom to suggest their own papers under this category based on their expertise, specialization, requirements, scope and need. The University/Institute may also offer discipline related Elective courses of interdisciplinary nature (to be offered by main discipline/subject of study).

4.Dissertation/Project : An elective course designed to acquire special/advanced knowledge. Such as supplement study/support study to a project work and a candidate studies such a course on his own with an advisory support by a teacher/faculty member is called dissertation/project.

5.Generic Elective (GE) Course (4 for honours courses and 2 each for B.A./B.Com. regular courses) : An elective course chosen from an unrelated discipline/subject with an intention to seek exposure beyond disciplines of choice is called Generic Elective. The Purpose of this category of papers is to offer the students the option to explore discipline Specific Elective Papers. The list provided under this category are suggestive in nature and each University has complete freedom to suggest their own papers under this category based on their expertise, specialization, requirements, scope and need. P.S. : A core course offered in a discipline/subject may be treated as an elective by other discipline/subject and vice versa and such electives may also be referred to as Generic Elective.

6.Ability Enhancement Course (AEC) : The Ability Enhancement (AEC) Course may be two kinds : Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC) and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), ‘AECC’ courses arethose courses based upon the content that leads to knowledge enhancement : I.Environmental Science and
II. English/Hindi/MIL Communication. These are mandatory for all disciplines. SEC Courses are value- based and/or Skill-based and are aimed at providing hands-on-training, competencies, skills etc.


7.Ability   Enhancement   Compulsory   Course   (AECC)   :
Communication/Hindi Communication/MILCommunication.

8.Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) (Minimum 2 for honours courses and 4 for regular course ) : These courses may be chosen from a pool of courses designed to provide value-based and /or skill-based knowledge and should contain both theory and lab/hands-on/training/field work. The main purpose of these courses is to provide students life-skills in hands-on mode so as to increase their employability. The list provided under this category are suggestive in nature and each University has complete freedom to suggest their own papers under this category based on their expertise, specialization, requirements, scope and need.
9.Practical / Tutorials (One each with every core and discipline/generic specific elective paper) : The list of practical provided is suggestive in nature and each university has the freedom to add/subtract/edit practical from the list depending on their faculty and infrastructure available. Addition will however be of similar nature.

Three Year Degree Courses under G.U.
(Semester System) (Six Semesters)
The College is affiliated to Gauhati University for three year Degree course (Six semesters) in both Arts and Commerce streams. The three year degree course leads to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) for arts students and Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) for Commerce Students.
The course consists of Six (6) Semesters, with two (2) Semesters in one academic year.

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) :
Astudent of Major course in B.A. is required to offer 1st subsidiary subject, 2nd Subsidiary subject (English, and MIL/Alt. English) and English (1st & 2nd Sem.) [Environmental studies will replace English in 3rd and 4th Semester]. For students offering Major Course in Language subjects their 2nd Subsidiary subject (i.e., MIL or Alternative English) will be any other Language then the one opted for Major. However such students can opt for a non-Language subject as their 2nd Subsidiary as well. Further, English Major students need to take Different English portion (1st & 2nd sem.) which is a part of general English paper in lieu of the grammer portion. In the 5th and 6th Semester the Major subject will comprise Six (6) papers.
Astudent of General Course in B.A. shall offer 1st Elective, 2nd Elective, 3rd Elective [i.e., MIL/Alternative English [1st and 2nd semesters]. In the 3rd and 4th Semester Environmental studies will replace English. In the 5th and 6th Semesters the students are required to study two (2) papers each of their 1st Elective, 2nd Elective and 3rd Elective.

Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) :
There shall be two types of courses in B.Com. :

(1)General Course
(2)Major Course.

B.Com. Semester I (Major and General Course) :

B.Com. Semester I candidates of both Major and General Course shall be required to offer papers of 100 Marks each. All the papers in B.Com. are categorised as (a) General paper (b) Core Papers and (c) Specialized papers.

For Example, in Semester I, a student of both Major and General Course will be required to offer the following papers.
101.Business Mathematics/Fundamentals of Insurance (Business Mathematics is Compulsory for Major Course).

103.Business Organization and Entrepreneurship Development.
104.Indian Financial System.

Specialized Papers :
(Any one of the following paper is Compulsory for Major students)
105.Cost Accounting (Accountancy)
106.Human Resource Management (Management)

108.Introduction to E-Commerce (E-Commerce).

Environmental Studies is a compulsory subject in the 3rd Semester (Environmental Studies-I), Total 50 Marks) and 4th Semester (Environmental Studies - II, Total 50 Marks).
